Hallie adores her grandmother; they’ve been close all Hallie’s life, and the way Hallie’s witnessed her grandmother’s extroversion, generosity and kindness has shaped Hallie into who she is. But Hallie is also aware that her grandmother has some very ingrained, conservative values: she’s racist, bigoted and homophobic. So when Hallie gets cast in the touring company of “Rent” and ends up understudying the very actively, demonstratively lesbian role of Maureen for the performance in Kansas City, MO — her grandmother’s town…that her grandmother is extremely excited about coming to…she has some concerns.
