Love, love love this show. I’ve seen it live and it continues to be one of my favorites. However, Lucky Yates segment was bit tone deaf and offensive. I am from the Bay Area, born and raised in Oakland and found it offensive that he felt fearful of the “black guys” in the alley, and that this “ambush” turned out to be a “gang initiation” from Oakland. Perhaps in the spirit of “story telling” he got a bit too imaginative and in turn reinforced some pretty negative stereotypes. Stereotypes that any true Bay Area has worked really hard to negate. I encourage Lucky to do better next time.
Lucky directly acknowledges multiple times that, even in the moment, he was trying to avoid stereotyping. He ended by saying the incident has not turned him into someone more likely to stereotype than before and he encourages the listener not to jump to racist conclusions. It was the cop that told him the fact that he was beaten by a group of people who fanned out behind him strategically and then left his phone, wallet etc. behind untouched fit a pattern of a series of gang initiations that had been happening in the area.
I used to skip past Kevin’s intros, I’ve grown to really love them! I like hearing about how you are doing & all the behind the scene effort that goes into making Risk possible. I look forward to the new episode of Risk every week. There is something so profoundly healing to have such an intimate glimpse into other people’s human experience. Sharing in the humor, trials and beauty of the lives of people I will probabaly never meet gives me a profound sense of connection. Truly, listening to these stories has helped me to feel “okay” in tough times when I would have felt very not okay. Thank you! I tell everyone about your show and have purchased copies of the book, for me and to share! Kevin, you are appreciated.
