There’s also a psychological cmoeonpnt that is rarely discussed or understood in this academic city planning context. The suburbs can be profoundly alienating. My family moved from the city to the suburbs when I was 13 years old. In Washington D.C., at 12 yo, I was able to take the bus downtown and go to museums by myself, go out in the alley and yell my friends’ names and suddenly have a posse to play touch football, I could easily walk to school and the corner store. In Cleveland Heights, none of that was as easy to do. I was stuck at home a lot and kind of immobile without being legally able to drive. Only in my late 20 s, living in NYC, did it occur to me that I could have ridden a bicycle more in Cleveland Hts for transportation. Odd that I didn’t even consider it at the time. It just wasn’t done.
